Gentera Makes Database Changes Auditable, Not Risky, with Harness Database DevOps | Harness Case Study

Gentera standardized on Harness to unify its fragmented software delivery environment and accelerate financial services across Mexico and Peru. By adopting Harness across CI/CD, Code Repository, IaCM, and Database DevOps, the company reduced pipeline complexity by roughly two-thirds, cut database rollback failures from 19% to under 1%, and shortened loan approval cycles from about two weeks to just three days—helping get credit into customers’ hands faster.

How Gentera Modernized Database Delivery with Harness

Gentera is a financial services company expanding access to credit, savings, insurance, and means of payment for underserved communities across Mexico and Peru, serving more than 6.7 million clients. Delivering on that mission meant modernizing software delivery across the board: standardizing pipelines, governing infrastructure, and making every layer auditable without slowing teams down. Database delivery was where that balance was hardest to strike.

For customer-facing systems like Gestión Digital, database schema changes carried significant risk. Changes ran through a custom Liquibase pipeline with no native governance or built-in rollback steps, so recovery from a failed change was manual and dependent on individual intervention, a costly gap on systems customers rely on directly. This pipeline also ran separately from application delivery, so app and database changes could not be released or rolled back together.

Solution

Gentera adopted Harness Database DevOps for GCP Cloud SQL as part of its broader platform standardization work:

  • Mobile Banking was built on native DBD steps from day one.
  • Gestión Digital migrated from custom pipeline steps to native DBD, immediately unlocking out-of-the-box OPA integration.
  • Every schema change now produces an automated, auditable trail accessible to Internal Control, Information Security, and Data Governance teams, without creating bottlenecks in delivery.
  • GCP BigQuery is being onboarded into DBD to bring MLOps schema changes under the same governance framework.

Gentera now has a consistent, governed delivery model for database changes across its entire platform.

Results

Key Win: Rollback failure rate on database changes dropped from 19% to under 1%.

  • Rollback failure rate: 19% → under 1%
  • Recovery from failed changes: manual, individual-intervention → automated and self-service unified with application
  • Audit trail: automated and accessible to Internal Control, Information Security, and Data Governance, no manual reporting required
  • Governance model: consistent across Mobile Banking and Gestión Digital, with BigQuery onboarding underway
"Database changes touch some of our most customer-facing systems, so we can't afford slow or manual recovery when something goes wrong. With Harness, every schema change is automated and auditable, which gives us the speed our teams need and the control our business requires."

Future Plans with Harness

Gentera is onboarding GCP BigQuery into Database DevOps next, extending the same governed, auditable framework already protecting Mobile Banking and Gestión Digital to MLOps schema changes, bringing database governance under one consistent model across the platform.
