The company offers revenue generation and management solutions, ad tech and mobile advertising platforms, and an array of digital audience engagement tools that drive new growth opportunities. 

Faster…But Not Fast Enough

Marketron struggled to deliver software. The company deployed its legacy applications twice a year using Jenkins and manual executions. In a way, this was better than the alternative: website outages that could impact revenue.  

Marketron preferred to release new software infrequently because production issues would cause additional costly effort.

Enter Mike Jackon, the new SVP of Software Engineering. Mike was tasked with modernizing  Marketron’s deployment strategy. Using DevOps principles, Mike increased deployment frequency to once a quarter. A 2x increase. But not fast enough. These quarterly deployments required a 4-hour downtime window of straight developer labor. On top of that, Marketron wanted to begin migrating its legacy applications to AWS and Kubernetes. Mike’s team was lean, and further improving deployment frequency in the midst of a cloud migration would be impossible without more people. 

 Mike had reached an impasse. Either hire more developers or find a better way.  

I either needed to hire more DevOps people or improve our tooling.
